Who we are

A small team with an unusually long memory

AD Software Systems is a Cape Town software consultancy. We have been building on the Microsoft stack since 2011, long enough to have seen which promises held and which did not.

We started out doing something that looked slightly odd at the time: writing mobile apps in C#.

In 2011 the accepted wisdom was that serious iOS meant Objective-C and serious Android meant Java, and that anything cross-platform would feel like a compromise. We took the other side of that argument, became one of the earliest Xamarin partners in South Africa, and eventually earned Xamarin Premier Partner status, the top tier of that programme.

Microsoft acquired Xamarin, and that technology is now .NET MAUI, sitting in the middle of the .NET platform rather than off to one side. The bet paid off. We have since carried fourteen production apps across to MAUI. We mention it not for the badge but because it says something about how we choose: we commit early to things we have actually evaluated, and we are willing to be unfashionable while the evidence catches up.

The same instinct is why our focus today is mobile, web, connected devices and AI. Not because those are the four words on every consultancy's homepage this year, but because they are what our clients are genuinely trying to build, and where a decade of platform depth still counts for something.

Recognised expertise

We have a resident Microsoft MVP

Our practice includes a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, one of a small number of independent technology experts Microsoft recognises each year for demonstrated technical depth and sustained contribution to the developer community.

What the award actually is

The MVP award is not a certification or a partner tier. You cannot study for it or buy it. Microsoft awards it annually, by nomination and review, to people who have both genuine expertise and a track record of sharing it publicly, through community work, speaking, writing and contribution. It has to be re-earned every year.

What it means for your project

Direct lines into Microsoft product teams, and early visibility of roadmap and pre-release builds. In practice that means fewer surprises: we tend to know what is being deprecated, what is about to land, and which new feature is genuinely production-ready versus still a demo.

Why we mention it carefully

An award is a signal, not a substitute for a portfolio. It tells you someone here has depth Microsoft itself has vouched for. It does not tell you whether we are right for your project. That is what a conversation is for.

A summary of what's above

Everything on this site in one place, for anyone who wants the short version.

Technology depth

  • .NET, C#, ASP.NET Core, Blazor and .NET MAUI on one shared platform
  • Azure, Azure IoT and Azure AI, from App Service to edge compute
  • SQL Server, Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL, whichever data shape actually fits
  • GitHub Copilot and Claude built into our own daily delivery

Sector experience

  • Financial services: loan origination, payments and insurance systems
  • Agriculture: real IoT sensor deployments across soil, water and hydroponics
  • Security: computer vision with pose and body-language modelling
  • Retail and logistics: barcode and RFID systems, Zebra and Honeywell devices

Platform migrations

  • Fourteen Xamarin and Xamarin.Forms apps carried across to .NET MAUI
  • WPF and WinForms systems modernised off ageing .NET Framework
  • Migrations off platforms Microsoft has since retired: Windows Phone, Windows Store, Silverlight

Generative & edge AI

  • An asset-generation pipeline spanning cloud and self-hosted GPU models
  • Stable Diffusion, UNet and VAE encoding running on NPUs and GPUs
  • LLMs, agents and MCP-based tool-calling, not single-shot prompts
  • Physical AI that reasons about the real world through sensors, not just text
  • Used for industrial catalogues, industrial assets and marketing imagery

Consulting & enablement

  • Architecture review, technology selection and cloud guidance
  • Agile and Scrum coaching with a decade of delivery behind it
  • AI adoption support: where tools like Copilot and Claude actually help
  • Developer mentoring and .NET, MAUI and Blazor training

Recognition & community

  • A resident Microsoft MVP on the team
  • Former Xamarin Premier Partner
  • Active support for Microsoft Developer communities in Cape Town
  • Involvement in STEM and youth robotics: FIRST Tech Challenge, FIRST Lego League

How we work

Architecture first, then code

Every system needs a foundation that holds. We start with the business problem and the constraints around it (budget, team, timeline, the systems you already run) and design something you can afford to own for years rather than something impressive to launch.

You work directly with the people writing the code. There is no account layer, no offshore hand-off, and no junior team quietly substituted in after the pitch.

Small and senior

We staff engagements with experienced engineers only. It makes us a poor fit for work that needs thirty bodies, and a good fit for work where the difficulty is judgement rather than volume.

Agile with a decade behind it

Scrum and Agile practice we have actually run, not just certified in, including the parts that are uncomfortable, like saying early when a date is not going to hold.

Honest technology choices

We are Microsoft specialists and we will tell you when the Microsoft answer is the wrong one. A recommendation you cannot challenge is not advice, it is a preference.

Built to hand over

Documentation, mentoring and handover are part of the work. The measure of a good engagement is that your team can carry it forward without us.

AI-assisted, not AI-replaced

Our own engineering practice already runs on GitHub Copilot and Claude, and it shows in the pace of delivery. What we hand over is that same modern workflow, not a black box your team cannot maintain once we leave.
